Lots of Updates, Including: I'm a Mother Again

So today I am exactly one week post-op. My knee hurt worse than I thought it would after surgery quite honestly, but then, I figured it was going to be a piece of cake. The surgery was, I don't remember a thing except nice people, warm blankets and the amazing spicey tuna roll my husband bought me to eat in the car on the way home.

My knee still hurts, but I guess it will for awhile. I kinda can't believe I signed up to do the other one in 5 weeks. doh!

The first picture was day 2 and the one below is day 5. Much improvement.

The day after surgery my little darling Lola, 1st generation mini Nubian miscarried her babies. Very sad for me, especially since I was drugged out and not really ready for any kind of news like that. Luci is due in a few days and I am hoping I can make it out to the barn for that. I have been so excited for these babies.

Here are our new dogs. So far, so good. I really like them. Good dogs are hard to find for our lifestyle- lots of vulnerable animals and lots of children...

Speaking of children, as far fetched as I know this sounds right after surgery and before another, we have accepted another darling baby boy. He's just a couple weeks old and meth addicted. We get him tomorrow. I know I'm crazy. Crazy for Jesus and since He's crazy for people, espcially children, I'm relying on Him to see us all through.

It's a story, to be sure, and I'll tell it someday when my knee isn't throbbing and I can sit at this computer longer. Suffice it say, that this was a direct answer to specific prayer. Kind of like, well Lord, if this is what is supposed to happen then please answer in this particular way so I can't mistake it. Bam! I love it when the Lord is gracious to communicate with me like that. Love it!

I also love my sleep, which I am forfeiting. I know that in advance. So, please pray for me- and all of us.

I had total anxiety about this Monday and Tuesday. I just felt sick and panicky, and thought maybe I shouldn't do this, because I had no peace. But I cannot forget that the Lord answered me in an unmistakable and specific way, so I said yes. Then, I had peace. It goes to show that we should NOT make choices out of fear or emotions- feelings change. Now, I am excited. I get to sit around and laugh at my funny toddler- completely healed from cocaine effects and neglect, and snuggle my new baby, who I believe by faith will one day be healed from meth effects. 'Cause I serve a mighty big God, and love really does cover a multitude of sins. Amen.

In other news, I have been dying for some peanut m&ms for a week straight and haven't caved.

Here we are, another book review! I am six days into recovery for my first knee surgery and I sure have been grateful to have a stack of good books to read. I read "I Am Second" in two days. It was a memorable read. It's a series of testimonies of people coming to Christ, some famous and names you would know, and others not so much. Each story was honest, and if you are looking for flowery and sweet, you won't find it here. Instead you'll find what I like- some good confession told to give glory to God. People telling their stories of the Lord intervening in their broken lives, marriages, careers...it's one of those books I like to give new believers, because it's so raw and truthful, and the kind of book I like to give long-time believers who might be feeling a little stale. Fresh faith!

Surgery, Dogs, and Babies Due~

This is going to be a crazy busy week. Thursday I am having orthoscopic knee surgery on my left knee to correct something I was born with apprarently, and six weeks later the other knee will be done. Here's a cool link to see an example of orthoscopic knee surgery.

Tomorrow is Biblestudy, the pre-op appointment and then in the evening the foster parent support group. Wednesday is full up too. Also coming up here is a trip to Walla Walla to pick up a Maremma Sheepdog and her pup. I am really hoping this guardian livestock dog works out. I'm pretty tired of messing with dogs and puppies- they chew, poop, jump on people and eat chickens, but Doug and I will feel safer having a dog outside, and the pup is bonus. Hopefully it will be trained by it's mother to guard the property and everyone, furry, feathery, and hairy on it. If not...well, I'll be selling a really nice puppy for future reference. *U*

Sometime in there we need to fit in a health and safety visit from our adoption worker. That all seems so crazy since we have had weeks of quiet- just hanging out, reading, and watching movies. Oh ya, and 2 of the goats are due at the end of the month. I wasn't planning all of this obviously...I had no idea the surgeon would suggest we get those knees done so quickly, but if I want to be ready for an active summer I need to get it over with. So, here we go!

Yesterday after church we pulled into the driveway and my ever-diligent eyes noted all the sheep and goats out of the barn except Penelope. So of course I hiked up my skirt and went right out to the barn. I found Penelope in a stall with two still-wet babies. Obviously she was bred early by Blackberry the Houdini goat before I put her in the pen with Handsome Rob. So, we have 1st generation mini Nubians again. The little mostly red boy has blue eyes. I guess that's some consolation for not getting the kids I had planned. They are cute~

Mamma's Baby

It's happened to every child at one time or another in his life. He inadvertantly hugs the wrong set of legs and then looks up...into a stranger's face!

As any foster or adoptive mom knows, bonding is a touchy subject. One that can cause some definate concern and at times anxiety. Add in any kind of trauma in the child's early life, and well, you might just have a recipe for attachment disaster on your hands. Or not.

I smile here. Because I know- God is good.

Christmas eve we went to the evening service at church. I heard it was a fine message. I don't know, because a certain active little baby boy was not interested in listening, which meant of course, I wasn't going to hear it either. Nor were those in the seats around us. So, we went out to the foyer, where a handful of other chagrined parents were allowing their little ones to run around the tables and floor, to get their wiggles out. I sat in a comfortable seat along the wall and watched my baby play with two darling little asian girls.

I have always called him "mamma's baby". I wore him in a wrap when he wouldn't attach and I sang to him (poor thing!) and told him he was "mamma's baby and I loved him. I prayed over him constantly when he was an infant suffering from the effects of drugs and neglect. And I told him he was "mamma's baby" because I knew it was vital for him to bond, even if they took him back later, like they said emphatically would happen. So, we all stuck our hearts out there, him included by 7 months old. That was when he bonded. He suddenly wanted to snuggle. He wanted me. He began to put on weight and he began to play. I knew he had bonded. His whole personality changed and he was healed once he bonded.

Back to the Christmas eve service...

As he ran in circles and played with the little girls, three women came in late and walked past me. He ran right into the last woman and grabbed onto her legs. He was giggling and happy- until he looked up. He saw a face he didn't recognize and then he just stopped. He gave her a look I couldn't decifer, then looked over at me. He let go of her legs and raced over to where I was sitting, put my knees in a strangle hold and layed his head in my lap, his face in her direction, and yelled out, "Mamma's Baby!"

Oh, bestill my heart.

I'll never forget that.

He took ownership of me, and wanted her to know he belonged to me.

Yes! He is without a doubt mamma's baby and has been since I first laid eyes on him.

What's so important about this book endorsed by so many? Well, what's more important to teach a child of God than prayer? This darling book is fun to read and the illustrations are colorful and beautifully done. Teaching our kids that God is with us, He hears us and wants to hear from us and speak to us is a priority, isn't it? If it isn't, it should be. Deep theology need not muddy the water for little ones, just simple truths, spoken with faith. This book is that.

Inspiration for my Ranch!

I am so excited for the focus I have for our little ranch...

I had a great time making feta, cheddar and chevre this year, and 2012 will be the year I branch out to bloomy rind cheeses- of course I promised my handsome husband I would make him plenty of cheddar. He loves my raw goat milk cheddar. I just got this gorgeous book in the mail today and spent a quiet afternoon by the fire getting inspired! I'm also working on getting my first honey bee hive going in the early spring, so between the baby, dairy goat herd, milking, cheese and soap making, turkey tending and chicken herding I have plenty lined up for myself.

The past year and a half I haven't been able to focus on the goats as much and soap making is just the minimum for our personal use. In fact, I closed my web shoppe, which was sad. I have spent my time nurturing the darling little eternal soul in the picture above the Lord kindly gave us. Now that he's walking (running I mean) and loves to go out to the barn, I can take him out in the spring when I go to milk. Life will be much easier! This boy loves the barn and especially the goats. He's a real little farmer-in-the-making. I am just so grateful for that.

My beautiful daughter is coming back to live with us and that's something else to be grateful for- and a true testimony to the power of earnest prayer. God is good!

True Religion is...

True religion is not what so many think.

True religion is not: rules and regulations. Ceremonies, various types of sacrifice and feasts.

True religion is not "Hey, let's get a bunch more- just like us- together." (e.i. "we are looking for like-minded folks..." usually spoken with either an air of superiority or in a conspiratorial tone- as in "you are INcluded)

If you go to worship God in a place where everyone looks, dresses, and acts just like you, you have bigger problems than you think. Christ is not exclusive, and neither should we be. We should be striving to look like Him, not our friends at Church.

"These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh." Colossians 2:23

True religion is not saying one thing and then doing another. Not at all. We've all got some changing to do, huh? Me first.

"If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless." James 1: 26

True religion is all about others. It's about bringing in the lonely, cold, hungry, thirsty- physically and spiritually, and INcluding them. Giving them a place in our community. If they want it.

True religion can be found in my church. This morning I really had to hold on to my tears (I do NOT cry in public) at church. You know who lit the Advent candle this morning? And gave the devotion? A group of men from the Union Gospel Mission in the Men's Program. Essentially homesless men drying up and going through withdrawals. I watched with my breath held and silent prayers going up to the Throne for the little man who literally tottered up the stairs and with shaking, tattooed fingers lit the candle after a couple of tries. I watched them with dignity and heads held high but still looking humble...as they passed the microphone around for each of them to read their parts.

That's one of the reasons I love my church.

I hope when you go to church you will look in the front rows and see the formerly homeless, the prostitutes, drug addicts and alcoholics. I hope they are INcluded. I hope they are warmly embraced!

Isn't it what we are left here on this earth to do? Embrace "the least of these?" INclude them in the Family /Body of Christ when He reveals Himself to them? and I don't know about you, but it sure could have been me. It has been some of my own family.

There are people at my church who drive across town and pick up the folks from the mission every week so they can come to church every Sunday. And more than once I have attended Bible study with the ladies from that mission because after they come to church and are INcluded they want to be discipled in the Word. Pretty soon the Word, powerful and effective, heals broken places in them. They disciple others....That's true religion.

True religion is also this girl Katie who is living the Gospel daily. For real!

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

James 1:27

True religion is about using the resources God has given us so He can love others through us. We are blessed to be able to be INcluded. It's a win win for everyone.

Foster Pregnant

Yes, I'm foster pregnant.

What does that mean?! You think I'm crazy? Well, that's up for debate...but anyway, what I call foster pregnant is when I know- I mean somehow I just know- I am going to get another foster baby. Not a child- a baby. I'm selfish and it's just easier to bond with a baby, even though they are obviously harder to care for in a lot of ways.

I don't mean to sound like I am excited. I'm not. I'm anticipating. I'm anticipating cuddling and snuggling,finding out if it's a boy or girl; personality and story... but I'm also anticipating diaper blowouts, sleepless nights and so many darn appointments with state workers and doctors that it would make your head spin. It's not easy. It's not exactly fun. It's just that the Lord put it on my heart and I know I'm going to take another baby soon.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Mother Teresa. I don't selflessly love every child I see. I love for my laundry to be caught up, and my house to be tidy and library books to not be overdue. I like to sleep and be able to cook nice dinners for my family and someone else who needs one now and again...I like to go sit at Starbucks without a screaming baby.

But when I start nesting, and thinking about a baby every night when I get into bed, and first thing in the morning, I know. There's a baby coming. I'm foster pregant.

I'm tidying the house, getting rid of stuff and making room...I'm sleeping as much as I can and I'm enjoying as much peace as I can with teen boys and an 18 month old boy. I'm reading as much as I can, and taking bubble baths when I can. (although last time someone let the baby loose and he jumped in the bath with me, fully clothed, while I had soap in my eyes and they were closed...THAT person got in trouble!)

All I can think is, "here we go!" Take a deep breath and get ready for what God's got...

Second Chances? A Story of Forgiveness

I wasn't expecting this story to grab me like it did. I don't have experience dealing with Alzheimers, however I do have experience dealing in childhood issues with a mother a little like Krista's in this story. I also have a great love for New Mexico, and the story takes place in Taos- and let me tell you, the author describes the landscape and culture of the people richly. I could smell and see what she wrote about- it was a great sensory experience without leaving my own living room.

The author writes beautifully and sometimes I want to even say poetically, but still, her dialogue for the characters (which are strong, believable, and hard to forget) is very every day and down to earth.

I had myself a good cry at the end- it was a good ending, but inevitabley painful as well and I experienced the whole thing right along with Krista, and that's the mark of a good story, isn't it? I'm saving this book for my daughter to read when she's home. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's a reminder that God's grace is for everyone and forgiving others heals us.

Horse Therapy

I have my (only) deep thoughts first thing in the morning, before I get out of bed, before I know if I'm fully awake or not. I also have some really inspired ideas...until the light of day hits and I somehow decide I won't/can't pursue whatever great thing I had planned in the wee hours.

Take this morning for example; I decided it would be a wonderful thing to get in touch with the social workers I know, and the Guardian Ad Lidim supervisor and round up a few teens in foster care who are into animals- especially horses. I thought, "Why not? I have 4 horses that I don't ever have time to groom, and a large amount of other critters who would use a brushing, patting, or scratching on the ears. Free therapy for kids!"

I've read a couple books lately by a woman who runs a horse rescue ranch that doubles as a day camp for troubled kids. I'm not up to something like that at this point, but certainly I could have a couple of horse crazy girls around to enjoy what I'm blessed with...or a foster kid stuck in the city with dreams of the country life...goats to milk, eggs to collect...?

Such a good idea until my first cup of decaf (yes, that's what I drink). Then I get little nagging thoughts and doubts as to why it's not such a good idea...or why I should wait...always wait.

I think the Lord blessed us with this little horse ranch and all the critters because I had this dream as a child- and He is a gracious God and kind to His children. But I also would like to share it. Somehow. Someday.

Sharing it with foster children doesn't seem enough. Maybe it is. I don't know. sigh.

A Booksneeze Review~

The Lucado Inspirational Reader by Max Lucado

This elegant looking book would be perfect for gift -giving, and would be wonderful on a coffee table or night stand. It's a collection of the best of Max's writings with some other quotes sprinkled in from others.

A nice thick book printed on good paper, I felt like I had a lifetime of faith building, encouraging words waiting for me when I opened it and perused. Hope...wisdom...uplifting words, all in one place. It's really quite something. I wasn't expecting the book to be so packed. It's chapters are topical and range from the Bible, to family, to worship and back again. I would say to you that if you are looking for a gift during a difficult time or a birthday or Christmas- this would be a good choice.

It's got a presentation page even. If you are looking for a bit of comfort or encouragment, or to give some away, this is the book for you.

One at a Time

I had an ipiphany today. Yesterday I was worried because I couldn't figure out what my real core belief is for my life's mission in the practical, everyday sense.

Today I was reading a book and the author wrote what I believe but never put into words for myself- so today I have it! I feel better able to live it. It's so simple it may shock you how truly lame I am that I didn't come up with this on my own. (or for those of you who know me well, you won't be shocked at all)

In my paraphrased words:

"I can't change the world.(Jesus will) But I can change the world for one person (at a time)."

So I'm trying to live in the moment. Not worried about tomorrow or regrets from yesterday- but looking-eyes wide open. I want to SEE the people God puts in front of me. Who needs the love of Jesus through me today? A hug? A smile? A sandwhich?

Maybe it's my husband or a son...my daughter? So often I look at who is across town or across the world...maybe I need to start looking across the room more often.

The beautiful Terri has had her book published! I am thrilled for her. She has allowed the Lord to make something for you and me out of her pain. She and her family lost their precious 12 year old son Trent in an accident last year. I have followed her blog posts for awhile now, and when I saw the news there I was just sick. I couldn't believe it. I had to read it and reread it. It just wouldn't sink in. Since then she has courageously shared and bared her soul, in agony at times I have read and followed along in her journey of healing. She has remained faithful to God through it all.

This is my favorite picture. As you can see her son Trent was a handsome young man- full of life and love and adventure. His loss is an enormous one. Heaven's gain, for sure, but still...hard for the people left behind. Maybe you have experienced a loss. Terri invites you to share. Maybe you are curious how a mother can continue to put her faith and trust in God after such a loss. What does she believe? Can she really endure terrible grief and yet rejoicing for her son all at the same time? How is it possible to be okay after such a devastation? I mean, some people never get over a loss like that. Life ends for them when it ended for the one they loved and lost. Good questions. I'm going to order the book myself right now and read all about it.

Blogging for Books: Fierce Beauty Review

We were not designed to be princesses of entitlement but warriors of encouragement, fighting to bring love and hope to the world." page 18 &19

This book started out really strong- the 1st chapter got me all fired up for a good Bible study, so I guess I was a little surprised to find it was really a series of short stories from Kims life- which is by no means boring! She hikes, snorkels in the sea, climbs mountains, rides horses and swims with sharks this woman. She leads an amazing life and the stories are grand adventures.

Each chapter tells a tale, usually illustrating a spiritual truth and application, which she points out and then ends with a few scriptures.

An enjoyable and inspiring book. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be...and I think there is huge potential with the 1st chapter; that could really be the introduction to a a powerful call to arms. She did have a call in the back of the book. Like I said, it was a good book, just not the power pack I had expected from the beginning.

Nail Seasons

Don't you love these?! I do. In the late spring all the way through fall and sometimes into the winter I am milking goats. This year they are bred and dried up early so I am free to get some darling gel nails. I love these cute polka dots. They make me happy just looking at them. Unfortunately I don't love fake nails and they ache the first night so I need to take ibuprofin, so I don't make a habit of them. I saw these in baby blue on Pinterest today though and couldn't resist, but mine are more a pastel green.

In the summer I wear flipflops almost daily and I love pedicures. This was one I got with my buddy Gretchen. We went together and got matching toes. Fun girl day, and no, I don't feel guilty 'cause girl days are rare. I mean rare.

Anyway, I love the farmgirl thing, and the mommy thing- those are the best! But it is nice sometimes to be spoiled. What do you do to take care of yourself?

A Huge Update in Few Words.

We signed an open adoption agreement recently. Look at that face, who wouldn't?

I honestly feel the same toward this child as the ones I gave birth to. Really. It's supernatural, the love we all have for this gorgeous boy. And guess what, he loves us. And guess what else? He loves animals! Finally a little farmer-in-the-making! A mini me!

The topic of adoption and orphans will continue to crop up on my blog because this is the month we as a nation focus our awareness a bit extra to those topics. Great timing for this book review!

The Encounter by Stephen Arterburn was a short work of fiction based on two true life stories. It packed a powerful emotional punch for me. Given the fact that I could relate to the character in one aspect, and then again for my husband (adopted as an infant) and one of my sons- soon-to-be adopted. I will, in fact, keep this book for him to read someday. I feel that strongly about the lesson of forgiveness, and the damage of bitterness it portrays.

I hate to give stories away, so I won't, but really, the dear little character of Ada broke my heart and made me cry. I read the book in a day, and had to hide in another room for the end, because I was wiping tears like mad, and I hate to cry! The compassionate side of me just really wanted to jump in the book and take care of Ada when she was still a young woman. The story is basically a young woman alone, abandoned by her lover who leaves her broken-hearted and pregnant. A true-to-life story for way too many, huh? That's something I like about the book- it could be any of us.

The setting is in Alaska and I liked that it was written in such a way that you know the author has really spent time there. Down the line after struggling for a few years she gives her darling boy up. She has no family to help her. She has made some obviously poor choices I get the idea she is a little unstable...The boy ends up in a home for children. Jonathon grows into an angry boy and the result is the boy grows into an angry man who has become toxic and ruins his closest relationships because he acts out of his bitterness. He has decided to hate his mother and he suffers terribly for that. He has no idea who she is...only that the hatred is eating him up. His pastor sends him back to Alaska to deal with the root of bitterness. The story starts there. I'm not going to spoil it and tell more- I think you should read it!

I can't believe this little boy is still looking for a family...he's adorable and those puppy dog eyes tell a tale of woes.

There are so many children...and so many big, empty-all-day houses. So many cars and boats and vacations. So many kids coming into the foster care system because of drugs and alcohol and selfishness, abuse, neglect...we don't like to dwell on it because it makes our hearts hurt. Hurting does't kill us. Maybe we should feel the hurt a little more often instead of medicating our feelings for others and worshipping our feelings for ourselves. Hey, I'm just as guilty. We have one life- then eternity. We better make it count for something valuable.

What's Love Got to Do With it?

Foster care has made concrete some ideas I had that were abstract. It has made my faith stronger, my character finer (still needs a lot of work) and my heart bigger.

I realized this morning when I woke up to a little chipmunk-like voice calling, "mamma!" and babbling away in his crib, that something profound had happened in our lives. He has been healed.

I recieved a grubby little screaming bundle, who didn't stop screaming very long, day or night, for months. He was in pain. He was grieving. All those sleepless nights, prayers, tears when I had heard all the ear splitting screaming I thought I could handle, worries, and worse-case scenarios about the future playing out in my mind took a toll. But, like actual childbirth, once you see that beautiful, healthy baby, all the pain is forgotten and there is just pure joy for the gift the Lord has given you.

Foster care for infants is having the God-given opportunity to embrace a little soul who already knows loss, grief, and pain, and submerge them in love and safety. Praying for his wholeness after reading disturbing books, and distressing and depressing videos provided to me to keep up my license taught me to put my hope in God when the world system offered none.

Broken children that the world says are always going to be broken don't have to be.

My God is sovereign. He is a Healer. A Provider. He is a gentle restorer of health in every way.

I am so very humbled this morning, and grateful to tears when I look at the beautiful, shining, chubby face I have come to adore as much as one I gave birth to, and see he is happy. Healed. Confident. Bonded and attached completely. For those of you who know adoption terms you know something amazing happened that experts say might not ever. You know disorders and effects of things that should supposedly cripple this child emotionally and perhaps mentally...I have a new philosophy for dealing with the foster care system. I'm tossing all the expert advice and books for The Book. There is One manual that works for every situation and person if it's believed. Well, I believe. And now that I have seen first hand what love can do, has done, and will do, I'm passing it on to you.

Jesus is love. So, what's love got to do with it? Look at the face below and ask again. Everything, my friend-everything.

"....while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus." Acts 4:30

What if I had missed these sloppy, wet kisses and clumsy, chubby hugs around the neck and legs?

For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

I have several friends who also do foster care, and they are seeing the same results of love and prayers that I am trying to describe (not so well?). The Word says "love covers a multitude of sins" and it does. Meaning that the harm done by neglect and abuse, drugs and alcohol- these sins- they can be covered by love. Don't believe me? Look at the pictures again. The eyes. I'm telling you Jesus heals.

For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the LORD, because they have called you an outcast: 'It is Zion, for whom no one cares!' Jer. 30:17

Foster care is an urgent need. Now more than ever. There are so many babies born into generations thick of drug addictions that they often don't even have one clean relative willing and able to care for them. So, they go to strangers. Like me. Like you?
P.S. in the foster parenting classes they tell you it's not often you get to adopt your foster baby.
We are adopting. My friends Michelle and Jeff are adopting, and several others I know locally are adopting. Why? Because God hears the prayers of His children.
Oh yes, there's risk involved. You may fall in love only to have that child returned, but I say to that, "It's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." and I mean that for the baby that gets to love you, and bond with you. It's terrible for them if they don't get to do that. Worse for them than if they don't bond.

Quarantined But With a Good Read

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease or something like it. That's what type of nasty virus my poor little cowboy has. So, like it or not, we are in a state of quarantine. Fortunately, I like it. We have been crazy busy and at least the youngest two boys and I are having some quiet days at home.

My poor Mr. Tall Dark & Handsome is still busy with work, hunting, football coaching, and CPR classes. I love that he takes time to read stories and cuddle our litle cowboy though.

Ben is loving Jeannie Fulbright's newest Apologia science book: Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology. He made the jell-O version of the cell and we enjoyed eating the experiment afterward, except for all the candies. Those were nasty.

Another very valuable aspect of being home more is that I have had time to read and study my Bible. I've several really good books going too, and the one I'm really growing from is Kay Arthur's "As Silver Refined."

You know I have such a past! You might have lived a nice, dull, clean life, but B.C. (before Christ) I didn't. I could be, and have been, bound up with regrets from past hurts and now that my kids are older, my failures. May I suggest to those of you whose children are young; focus on your relationship with God, your spouse, and your kids above all else. Do life, instead of letting it just happen, and do it with them!

Kay Arthur is a woman who has immersed herself in Bible study for years. Her speech and writing are full of treasures from the Word. I expected as much when I got this book, but it has been so much more than I even expected. Imagine life full of peace and victory istead of defeat and depression when things don't go right. I was able to resolve some hurt and guilt issues that were there since my childhood (and my kids') by the 2nd chapter!

Learning that the key to not being defeated by circumstances of any kind or people, is knowing God's Word and character so thoroughly that the enemy can't get his fiery darts past that shield of faith is amazing liberty! God is sovereign and nothing, but nothing, happens in your life outside of His will for your refinement, growth and good, is the way to overcome despair and to be healed.

This book will teach you how to respond in faith and not fear. It will teach you to see with spriritual eyes and to not just put on the full armor of God but to put it to effective use!

This morning I woke up early with some past regrets eating a hole in my gut. My daughter has suffered for a mistake I made when she was 5 years old. She is dealing with it now, and I am so grateful she has a relationship with Christ that allows her to go to Him for her healing. Nevertheless, I was suffering such pangs of remorse and feelings of failure I knew I needed to seek the Lord for some real comfort and answers. I read page 35 that I have marked in As Silver Refined. It says, "Where normally there would be defeat, they can attest to victory. They're walking through fire, but their focus isn't on the flames; it's on the One who walks with them in the midst of the fire, as Shadrach and Meshach and Abednego experienced in the fiery furnace. They aren't thinking about what damage this will do-and they aren't coming out smelling like smoke!" (I added the bold)

Boy I needed to read that. I realized that God will use my mistake and that I need not continue to agonize over failures with my children. They all know the Lord and are growing...God will use even those things to refine them, too. Oh sweet relief!

I am so grateful the Lord chose to put a copy of this book in my hands at just the right time. I plan on asking my two older kids to read it. There's a well-laid out 13 week Bible Study guide in the back too, just an FYI.

Kay reminded me in this book to never forget the our minds are the battleground- the front lines for satan's attacks. It's so true. The mind really is where the battle is fought and won (or lost) and so my friends, resist! Remembering this fact is the key to winning spiritual war. Soak your mind in God's truth. This book is a powerful tool. I have found it of great value in my walk with God and my family.

Fall Cookin': Buttery lemon Iced Mini Pear Pies

I LOVE to cook in the fall! The bounty! The options! It's an amazing time. I love to have teas with yummy fruity baked goodies, table decorated with mums and pumpkins- which you can get all kinds of these days. I'm in love with pumpkin(s).

Our ranch is surrounded by ripe apples and pears right now, besides local peaches still and all the lovely things you can do with these should make your head spin. It does mine. Guess that's why I'm jogging 5 or 6 mornings a week now- fall means calories! But such delicious ones that I have no regrets.

Today I made the most scrumptious little pies.(actually I'm eating one right now. Again.) I had some pears that were a bit over ripe so I thought I'd do something meaningful with them. Oh boy, did I!

First make your crust. You can use your recipe or my not-so-healthy easy one.

Pie crust:

(just so you know I'm feeding teen boys so I doubled my recipe but the one below is the single)

1 cups all-purpose flour + 1/4 freshly ground white wheat flour (I couldn't do all dead flour!!) you can just go ahead and do all-purpose.

1/4 tsp. salt

2/3 cup chilled butter flavor Crisco (I know, I know! Bad.)

1/4 cup cold water

Mix the flour and salt together and then use a pastry blender or whatever method you like to cut in the shortening. Sprinkle in the water a little at a time until it's just combined and holding together and then form it into a ball, wrap it in saran wrap and put it in the fridge for an hour or so.

Pie filling:

Now then, with you crust chilling, you'll want to get about a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of flour to make a rou. In a smallish saucepan get your rou nice and bubbly and brown over medium low heat and add 2 or 3 chopped and skinned pears. Mine were small so I added 3. For sweetner I used about 3 tablespooms of raw wild honey, but you could use sugar or brown sugar. About 4 TBS. add a bit of cinnamon and a good squeeze of lemon and heat through until thickened. *(If I'd had some good lavender dried I would have ground some and used it instead of cinnamon.) It should be nice and "saucey" but with chunks still.

Set it aside to cool while you are working with the crust.

~But before you get your crust out make your icing~

1/2 cup powdered sugar to about 2 or 3 TBS fresh lemon juice,

a TBS of lemon zest and 2 TBS soft butter. Mix this mess up until it's smooth and creamy. It's so good you will not even believe it! Again though, if I'd had some good lavender I would have used that; imagine how pretty the pies would look iced with a little lavender too.

Now roll out your crust and use a biscuit cutter or glass to cut circles.

Put a heaping tsp. of your pie filling in each circle and then fold it over to make a half moon.

Use a fork to pinch the edges together.

As you can see I have not the burden of being a perfectionist.

Put all those little darlings on a parchment paper lined baking sheet (you will need 2 if you doubled up like I did) and bake at 350' for about 30-35 minutes. They should be a gorgeous golden brown.

As you can see I am greedy and like to stuff as much filling into my little pies as possible.

While they are still warm go ahead and ice them. Then serve them up with a glass of (raw) milk to your kids or grandkids and with a nice hot cup of tea or coffee to your best girlfriends. (They are way too good to waste on anyone outside the family or closest friends. Just kidding! Take them to the next church potluck and you will be a hit.)

They are incredible.

*Another idea:

Go ahead and use some other kind of filling- peach, apple, apricot, whatever you like. You could also make a quick and easy batch of savory snacks like I did and use a bit of pizza sauce and some mozzarella cheese instead of fruit. I have some other ideas too- try chicken and a white sauce with parm cheese inside and sprinkled on top, maybe a bit of spinache or broccoli, or ham and cheese...you could try endless combinations.

These would be GREAT football snacks! The guys will think you are all that. (Of course you are!)

Lioness Arising Book Review

I recently finished Lisa Bevere's newest book. I had not read any of her books before, so didn't have any idea what to expect. The title was intriguing and I couldn't wait to start it!

I was a little disappointed. I have read lots of "get off the couch and change the world" books, because that's just who I am. I am totally the lioness Lisa describes in her book! Maybe I've just read a few too many and the message is getting a little redundant for me. It's another activist book with a pinch of modern church feminism thrown in for good measure. See chapters 5 and 6, especially the introduction quote for 6. The framework of the book is personal life application of the lioness, and I felt that saved the book for me. It was fascinating.

I do like The Message paraphrase of the Bible, and she uses that throughout the book. However I felt it was unfortunate that she used a paprahrase to "back up scripturally" some of the ideas about women in the church. Sad face. I admit also to being annoyed by her use of many "churchy" catch phrases,that's just a personal quirk of mine. I don't like that kind of thing in writing.

But I got alot out of the book and some things changed me.

I was highly interested in her research and life application of the lioness. She made such an impression on me that I will never forget the visual of the lionesses and their community. The way they raise and train and protect all the young in the group, and the way they are stronger for building the sisterhood amongst themselves, even to feeding and nurturing not only the cubs and each other but their lion (s). The way they set up their community and it's application for us is what really struck me. I'll never forget it and plan to do a little more reading on it on my own.

Lisa wrote words that I had always felt but didn't have. Her ability to articulate a strong need in our country I think, made me proud of her and that portion of the book. We are too isolated, and it makes us weak. I have said to friends for years how much healthier our families would be if we built a strong, supportive community and branched out of that to include others. Too many of us (certainly my family) live without the benefit of grandparents, aunts, uncles or even parents. Women are the makers of community, it's one of the chief ways we bless our families. We build it with food, talk around the table, family parties and get-togethers, marking special occassions, etc. Teaching family values and family loyalty from the cradle has always been important to me, and I think that helps the kids identify strongly as part of the family over their peers later on.

I didn't enjoy the book as much as I'd anticipated but I did take away the life-changing determination to get busy building that community for my family!

Fall is here and it's my favorite season! Here in Yakima the weather is fine...hot days and cool, crisp mornings and evenings. So many good things happen in the fall. So many good foods! It's harvest time and time to gather hay, breed the goats, start school, and best of all Biblestudy starts back up!

Our Homeschool Year 2011-12

Here's a look at our school year in pictures. Each picture has a link so you can check it out or buy it even. I pray about choosing what is right for the child at the specific time each year before I buy books and plan. I think the Lord has a specific plan for each of my children and I try to co-operate as much as is possible (for me). I don't always do a good job of this, but the Lord is always faithful to lead me to the right stuff!

I also purchased the ebook of maps, timeline, etc. for this. Ben's excited about Greece! Too bad we don't have the kind of budget for a fieldtrip...can you imagine??!

Quite Literally

There are times when a Bible verse just reaches out and grabs me. I believe this is the Holy Spirit speaking to me, and time and time again, the verse has proven true for me. The Hebrew thought on Scripture, which makes total sense to me, is that there are several "layers" of truth to every Word in the Bible. Literal is one of them, and I have come to believe this portion of scripture is literal if I am really diligent, as it says I should be.

When I am paying attention to my dairy goat herd carefully, I definately have enough milk, yogurt and cheese, buttermilk, icecream, kefir and whatever else I make with the milk, for my family and to share with others. (verse 27)

When I have a good crop of goat kids, from good herd management and the blessing of the Lord, I sell enough to "pay for the price of a field" (verse 26). I don't buy a field, but I do. I buy the hay! That's how the goats support themselves, the sale of the kids buys the winter hay.

So, I sell the goat kids to buy a "field" (of hay). When I realized this I just got the chills.

God is good. Take Him at His Word." He has magnified His Word above (even) His name" says Psalm 138:2b. That's huge! Dig in there and read it and believe it!

The Holy Spirit!

Those of us who are believers talk more than we really understand about the Holy Spirit I think. Maybe you believe but are uncomfortable talking about Him at all. This book might help you grasp some simple truths that have been made complicated by people. (and boy, don't people and religion complicate the Simple Truth all the time?!)

Reading this book was like having a good, in-depth conversation. I like this pastor and have read one of his other books and watched a DVD teaching, so I already knew I liked him and that his books are easy to read. I was looking forward to reviewing this book.

I got an advanced copy, so it wasn't the final edit you can buy now, with the study guide in the back. Yay for you! That would be helpful.

The topic is one I have had on my mind for years, with a number of questions swirling around. I have to say, I did learn a few things, and get others clarified. Robert Morris lists the scipture for backing his statements, so I found it handy to have my Bible at hand, along with a pencil and highlighter. (but that's just me) Pastor Morris goes to great lengths to say in a clear and conversational tone so people like me can understand, that The Holy Spirit is a Who not a What. I already knew that, but was glad for the scriptural backing anyway. In the book he clarifies the work of The Holy Spirit, His purpose, and His gifts. The author tells some personal stories to add color, humor, and humility to the teaching. I appreciate that he doesn't write in a dry way, or use language that I need a dictionary to understand.

He discusses at length the gifts The Holy Spirit gives, and what they are to be used for. You will read about the history of Pentecost, the biblical feasts, and much about baptism.

I took away much from this book and do recommend it to anyone serious about their faith in Jesus and wanting to grow in the knowledge of the amazing Holy Spirit, His benefits (power, love, fruit, and gifts) and sorting out more thoroughly what the Bible says about the three baptisms. Yep, there is a theme woven through the sciptures, you read it right, three baptisms. *U*

Streams in the Desert Daily Devotional: A Simple Prayer
“I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me” (Acts 27:25).
I went to America some years ago with the captain of a steamer, who was a very devoted Christian. When off the coast of Newfoundland he said to me, “The last time I crossed here, five weeks ago, something happened which revolutionized the whole of my Christian life. We had George Mueller of Bristol on board. I had been on the bridge twenty-four hours and never left it. George Mueller came to me, and said,
“Captain I have come to tell you that I must be in Quebec Saturday afternoon.” “It is impossible,” I said. “Very well, if your ship cannot take me, God will find some other way. I have never broken an engagement for fifty-seven years. Let us go down into the chart-room and pray.”
I looked at that man of God, and thought to myself, what lunatic asylum can that man have come from? I never heard of such a thing as this. “Mr. Mueller,” I said, “do you know how dense this fog is?” “No,” he replied, “my eye is not on the density of the fog, but on the living God, who controls every circumstance of my life.”

I took one cup of soaked cashews and a tiny pinch of salt and the 1/2 cup of soaking water and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a tablespoon of raw honey and blended it all in the VitaMix until creamy.

For the chocolate pudding I took two ripe avacados, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder, a tsp. of vanilla and 2 TBS. of raw honey and blend until creamy.

adjust honey to your tastes.

Assemble in pretty custard cups or glasses and garnish with berries, cherries, or coao nibs.

Tell your family the ingredients AFTER they have a couple of bites. They will be shocked, but will finish gladly!

Jalapeno Garden Flax Crackers

My husband and I love spicey food. We also love flax crackers, so I put together this recipe, with the added bonus of protein from raw goat milk feta whey!

*Disclaimer- I don't meaasure. All are approximates and you should adjust accordingly.

In my food processor I put two plump jalapeno peppers, (this was too hot! You should add 1/2 to 1) some sea salt and pepper, gorgeous rosemary and the juice of a lime and gave it all a whirl for awhile until the jalapeno was mush. Then I added a cup of cilantro and two of fresh baby spinach and around it went again until blened not-quite-smooth.

I added about 2 1/2 cups of flax seeds and then 3 cups or so of the whey and whirled it a bit more. I don't want the flax seeds proccessed too much. After the mixture has sat for a few minutes and has gotten slimey, I spoon it onto the mesh sheets on my dehydrator trays.

I dehydrated these for about 36 hours because I like them super crisp.

I apologize for not finishing this post. I am so crazy busy with a 1 and 2 year old now- and both active little boys! I will get back to it eventually, especially since I am about to open up my first cheddar of the year and see what it tastes like. I have a feeling that the 3rd and 4th will be best since I modified the recipe for raw milk and added 2 quarts more milk to the recipe. The cheddars even look yummier!

Well, Thursday night I got my wish and the stork (after hours social worker) brought me another kiddo. Not a girl, and not one year old. A boy, two. Shy, speaking and understanding spanish more than english and not speaking much at all for that matter. He is scared and self conscious. Sad for someone that age to worry about much at all, but he is anxious. He's good at "floating away" when he feels overwhelmed.

He has some very obvious attachment issues. Those don't always come in the way we think. This little guy was attached to the social worker who brought him and got very distressed when she left, but attached himself to me and awhile later when she came back to bring some forgotten paperwork he had forgotten that she was his security a short while ago. He tries to anticipate me, please me, and help me. Sweet, but not right for a rambunctious two year old boy.

The morning after he came I started to feel some heavy anxiety myself. Yesterday too. I was thinking, "What in the world have I done?!" and just freaking out really. But I prayed alot. I mean alot. I asked the Lord to calm me and give me peace and a great love for this child. He did. I had to do some errands today for a sick goat, and I missed the child! That was actually a relief.

No Baby Girl After All

Well after re-arranging my life, house, and buying and borrowing crib, mattress, and carseat...I do not have a little person to use them.

I was getting a little toddler from a sting operation yesterday, and was prepared for a traumatized baby. I had talked to social workers, supervisors and placement coordinators and had arranged to be at the employee entrance in the back at a certain time- all to find out at the very last possible minute (as I sat in the car at the entrance!) that there was miscommunication and a relative was waiting for the child the whole time. Talk about emotional rollercoaster. I was dissapointed and upset at first, but there's no reason for a believer to freak out about those things, huh? Obviously the Lord had reasons and so as they apologized all over the place I sweetly said all was forgiven and that these things happen. I did have to nurse my wounded heart with a Starbucks Coconut Mocha though, and I even had the whipped cream and did NOT get nonfat milk this time.

When I stopped to think about it I realized one of my dear friends Joni had been praying all day for the baby and her little young mother. We had talked on the phone in the morning before the sting operation went down- she and I both were praying. So, of course the Lord was kind and let the baby go with a relative and not me, a total stranger. Prayer! Powerful!

So, I am content. And quite happy when I think of the guilt-induced promise I was given by the placement coordinator: first place on the list for the next baby!

A Girl Tomorrow

Tomorrow we are expecting a 1 1/2 year old little girl to join the family for long term placement.

Exciting! I have felt it was time to take another, but was thinking newborn boy- my favorite! (let's just be honest) but in prayer lastnight again I told the Lord to send whomever He was going to send and I would be happy with whatever. He did.

She's not a neewborn, but at least I'll be able to sleep!

Two toddlers...I might be crazy, but I think it will be just fine. Eventually.

I have been so busy making soap and cheese and selling the goat kids and the regular mantainence of the herd the I have not gotten around to finsihing my Part 2 cheddar post. I will!

I just wanted to say that I am thinking about offering soap making and cheesemaking classes and wonder what people would think of that? If you like the idea, please post a comment and tell me what you would like that to look like if you wanted to come, and how much would be fair to charge- with lunch included in the cheese class. I'm thinking feta, chevre with my raw goat milk and store bought milk to make mozz.

Raw Goat Milk Farmstead Cheddar part 1

I have been on a big cheese making kick. With so much milk from the girls, I have got to do something with it, and we eat so much cheese- especially cheddar.

I am not a perfectionist, and tend to put my own spin on everything, but so far so good.

I started out with two gallons of raw goat milk. If it's straight from the goat and strainer, body temperature works great. If it's been chilled like mine had, heat it up to 85'.

I boiled water in my cheese pot to make it sterile first, along with the stainless steel slotted spoon. After letting it boil 10 minutes or so, I dumped the water into the sink to make the bath. The hot pot is now empty and I dump my two cold gallons of milk in there, put the lid on and set the whole thing in the hot water bath. It only takes a few minutes to get the temp up and I stir frequently.

I do it this way because it's convenient and easy. Two things I like.

Now my milk is the right temp, I add my two ounces of mesophilic culture. (you can substitute with cultured buttermilk) My culture is frozen into cubes, so I toss in two and stir until completely dissolved and the whole batch of milk has gotten it's share. To make the culture, you are supposed to go through a process too, but I just boil the quart jar and lid so it's sterile, add raw milk, and the packet of culture starter, stir, and let it sit for I think about 14 or so hours. Then I freeze it into cubes for easy use. You can ruin a perfectly good culture packet not starting with pasturized milk I suppose, but I know my milk is clean.

I keep a clean bowl of cold water to set my spoon in so it stays clean. The water is changed every now and again throughout the process.

Once the culture is mixed in, the milk ripens for 30 minutes. So, it's time for a cup of raw goat milk latte with cinnamon and a muffin.

The lid comes off and I put in the rennet now. I have tablets at the moment. I prefer the liquid, but oh well, use what you have.

1/4 of a rennet tablet has been setting in 1/4 cool water (well water here) for the past 30 minutes as well, in order to dissolve. You can't use chlorinated city water.

Stir it in gently, but oh-so-thoroughly. I stirred for a few minutes. Peaceful. I need peace around here. You'll see why in a minute.

Now, this sits for an hour. So...

might as well make a quick batch of chocolate cherry and walnut icecream, right?

Gotta use up that milk.

Don't look around and see that the whole house is a mess and the baby is tired of the highchair and has thrown his food down to the dog. No! Don't look! It'll just stress you out. It does me.

I tell baby the icecream is ready and I'll share. Good, now he's quiet.

I'm still waiting another 30 minutes for the milk to become curd, so I'll check over the recipe again and enjoy some amazing raw milk icecream.

Feta!

Feta is a super easy cheese to make, and it's so tasty on summer salads.

My favorite recipes come from an old used copy of Cheesemaking Made Easy . I have several cheese making books and this is by far my favorite. Some I like better for the full color photos, and some for the great articles on cheesemaking history, but for the actual step-by-step cheese making nitty gritty, this is my book. It's easy, that's why! The recipes are basic, and that's all I have time for.

I buy my supplies at the New England Cheesemaking Supply Company. I love their customer service and I'm a big fan of the free newsletter and their blog- which is a constant supply of inspiration.

Here are some pictures of my latest feta:

1 gallon of milk cultured, then rennetted, and cut and stirred. (2 hours + stirring time, supposed to be another 20 minutes but my curds were soft, being raw goat milk, so I allowed them another 20 minutes or so for stirring, so that was another 40 minutes altogether)

Removing the curds from the whey into a ss colandar. I used the whey to make some amazing challah bread and to water my tomatoes.

All the curds are in the cheesecloth now and hanging for about 4 or 5 hours to get more whey out of the curd.

Then the curd is sliced into 1 inch squares

and salted with kosher salt flakes or you could use the cheese salt. I have both, but just opted for what was close at hand.

I found this amazing little veggie container, like a miniature fridge. I use it for cheese all the time. It has holes on the bottom and a catch pan that snaps on the bottom, so as the whey is released from the cheese still, I'm catching it away from the cheese so it doesn't just sit in it and get mushy. I put the salted curds in it and let them cure for a few days in the fridge.

after a few days I put them in jars of fresh basil, red chile peppers, and good extra virgin olive oil. Covered in the oil, the cheese will be very flavorful and stay good for a long time. These make excellent gifts. Who wouldn't love to get a jar of homemade cheese pretty enough to display on the counter I ask you?

mmmmmmmmm....I think I need a salad.

I read that using raw milk you can and should use less culture and rennet in cheesemaking because raw milk already has so many live and active bacteria, enzymes, etc. and so I tried this recipe using 1 1/2 gallons of milk instead of just 1 gallon, and the same amount of rennet and culture the recipe called for. Also I hung it for only a couple hours and cured it in the fridge for only 3 days instead of 5. This was the BEST feta!! The taste and texure are the best I have ever made. I will be duplicating this tomorrow and hopefully once a week until I'm out of milk this winter!

This morning, after all my chores are done (well, mostly) I finally have some time to blog! I have a lovely raw milk chevre culturing and some raw chunky monkey goat milk ice cream going. I've been busy with lots of goat kids and milk.

Anyway I recently read another book for Blogging for Books- I know, when do I have the time, right? But I do read. I love to read! This book kept me guessing, and kept me up late at night. I am normally an early-to-bed-early-to-rise sort of person, but I was hooked on this story and finished it in two days. Make that nights. Late nights.

The thing about the book that I liked the most was that I never knew what was around the corner. I was always shocked and surprised. It really wasn't what I thought! It's disturbing and it's scary, but it's got characters that come alive, and are brave and vulnerable. If I could change it a bit, I'd make more time for the old lady and her captor. Those scenes were good! Freaky, but that little old granny was brilliant. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but let me throw a few key words and phrases out ther for you to chew on, and then go read the first chapter and maybe go buy it. Sit in the sun and read!

Demons, Catholic Church, Pope, Priests, foster homes, children, criminal, ancient, sorrow, Italy, clever Gramma....are you curious now? You should be. I'm picky when it comes to books. I don't have much time to read so if it's not good I won't bother. This one was good! My husband got interested after I read it and he took it after me. He felt the same way.
I'm not at all saying I believe the premis of this story- I just found the whole thing fascinating and something to consider. Really, I just allowed myself to become enthralled in a supernatural thriller. I usually don't, but I have to say, it hooked me.

Hello, Goodbye, and Blessed

Our little ranch is full of life this spring! It always is this time of year, and it's such a blessing. Lots of "hellos" to new little creatures. There are kittens in the barn, this puppy you see above, "Otis", who is naughty and rascally, and everything a puppy should be. You would aslo find newly hatched out chicks, with more nests "cooking" and goat kids galore- except they all get sold so quick, even before they are weaned! This year they have all been 1st generation Mini Nubians and they get snapped right up.

I asked the Lord for that this year because I really want to pare down the herd so I can get bees next spring. Besides, there really are more, way more, than I need. Luci alone gives me a gallon per day, and her daughter is due to kid any day now, so I'm thinking between those two and Lola I should be swimming in milk soon.

Miss Gina had triplets, and darlings at that. She and the boys were sold today to a very sweet young woman who is excited to get her first goats, and I'm excited for her. Gina wouldn't allow me to milk, so sadly, she has to go. I have rules about such things, and the girls have to earn their keep around here. Here is Gina when she was a kid~

Below is the nest of the hen I affectionately call Mrs. Duggar. She has so many eggs she is trying to hatch that she cannot possibly keep them all under her. They keep rolling out and getting cold. There is another hen with a nest up in the barn rafters. Honestly, I do not know what these girls are thinking!

We had the equine dentist come out yesterday for the two old geldings. Now that was interesting! It took all morning long, and bless his heart, he had his work cut out for him. Good thing he's young- that was hard work!

Sunday, as you know was Mother's Day and I was really blessed by my guys. They cleaned the house (hooray!) and they grilled filet mignon, asparugus spears, and baked potatoes with all the goodies- and they dressed up in slacks and ties to sit at the table with me. Sweethearts!

I love my guys! Today we got a lot done- butchered an egg-eating hen that was always one step ahead of me (until today!), sent two little doe kids off to their new home, cleaned the kidding stall, burned horns on the two little boys that got sold today and are leaving with Gina on Friday, and took care of quite a bit inside the house as well. I am feeling pleasantly tired and ready for a quiet evening with my book. ah....productivity and rest in equal measures.

Do you ever go over history and wonder how such evil can prevail time and again? The holocaust is on my mind very often and has been for years. The children in the foster care system...600 to 700 new placements per month in my area alone. We think if we insulate ourselves and our children from unpleasant facts they won't touch us. The reality of that is they are more certain to touch you or your children, grandchildren, eventually because of apathy. Apathy allows evil to prevail. Thank You Lord, that Your pattern is that good wins out in the end. Oh, but for those in the middle....

Senseless Killing and Discouragment

I have had a little project the past couple years (alright, many), keeping heritage breed turkeys. I have had little to no success. I had finally kept a mating pair alive and lastnight what could have only been a coyote (or two) killed my beatiful Royal Palm tom turkey.

The thing that makes me most angry is that coyotes waste most of the bird. Usually guts and breasts alone are eaten, and in this case only one breast and the head.

Sigh. He was a beautiful, friendly bird.

Hard to replace. Expensive.

I admit, yesterday morning I was already discouraged. I love all the critters and the things involved in raising them, but doing it mostly by myself is wearing on me. These creatures are my hobby- my passion- and nobody else in the family really gets too involved except my husband, who just doesn't have the time. So...I had a bad morning yesterday and came in from the barn and cried in the bathroom before going about my day. I skipped church even. Just went to town and got a coffee and a stack of magazines and decided the my husband and boys could fend for themselves for a few hours. I needed it. The chores, the worry over running out of hay, the losses of life because gates are left open by careless people, the financial strain of vet bills...(horses!) I think it's time to find homes for some of my critters but the economy is so bad it's hard to find good homes for animals where the people can afford to keep them.

Bleh. I need to pray about this more. I'm tired.

Got Terroir?

You know the kind of foods that are exciting to me? They are the natural, God-given foods that reflect the climate, geography, weather, and abundance or even lack of at times, of the place they come from. Do you realize how unique certain foods are and that they can't be exactly reproduced, like a factory churning out processed-exactly-the-same stuff can be?

Certain foods reflect where they are from. They taste differently than other foods made the same way in a different place. Even in a close, but different neighborood. That's why cheeses have names often times deriving from a neighborhood or village. You could only get a certain cheese from a certain place, if you wanted it to taste similar every time.

Foods like milk, cheese, honey, wine, coffee beans, and sourdough breads all have different tastes. In the cheese world it's called Terroir, referring to the way somethings tastes uniquely of the place it's from, the grass the animal eats, the weather and climate and all those different things that go into making something belonging to only that certain place, at that time. There are so many variables in nature that we can't control. I think the Lord made it that way on purpose, and instead of enjoying unique tastes, so many of us want the same old reliable flavor and texture in the same familiar package. bleh.

Most people understand that wine is different depending on the grapes the year it was made and the way it was aged, etc. etc. Well, honey is like that too. It tastes different and looks different according to what kind of nectar the bees have been eating. So many delightful differences! So unlike the little plastic bear bottles lined up on any store shelf, arranged in rows of exactly matching honey inside and out of the bottle. In reality, amazing raw honey from the hive can taste different depending on so many things, including the weather and soil conditions surrounding the hive where the bees forage.

Just something I was thinking about as I read today about bees and honey, and pondered as I milked and made a batch of raw milk chevre. The Lord God gave us so many rich gifts.

Spring Veggie Quiche

Spring is finally here! That means there are plenty of farms- maybe yours- with an abundance of delicious things to eat! I am blessed to live in an area that is chock-full of farms and orchards so eating seasonally is easy. Right now there is local asparagus (which we LOVE!) and baby spinach. On our ranch we have plenty of free range eggs and fresh raw goat milk to spare. I am happily making cheese again, but this morning I was craving a quiche and thought I'd use our own goat milk instead of half and half.

Here's what I used:

2 nine inch pastry crusts (store-bought- sorry!)

10 slices of crisp bacon (I baked mine in the oven) - you could sub with ham or any other meat

1 cup shredded gouda cheese (you can use swiss)

1/3 cup chopped sweet onion sauteed in bacon fat until carmelized

1/3 cup finely sauteed sliced asparagus (stalks and heads)

1/2 cup organic baby spinach (throw in the sautee pan at the last minute to wilt)

7 free range eggs

2 cups fresh raw goat milk (you can use half & half)

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

1/2 tsp. cayene pepper

Sprinkle the sauteed veggies in the pastry shells, then the crumbled bacon.

Beat the eggs and add the milk and cheese and seasons and pour them over the veggies and bacon in the crust.

Bake uncovered at 425' for 15 minutes and then lower the temp to 400' for another 30 minutes.

Let it stand 10 or 15 minutes before you cut into it.

Add a gorgeous baby spinach salad with goat cheese and homemade dressing and your family will be ready to set the table!

(My personal favorite salad has sliced strawberries, toasted pecans and the cheese-super yummy!)

~Dalyn's homemade Italian~

1 cup raw apple cider vinegar with the mother

1 3/4 cup good cold pressed olive oil

1 1/2 TB dried italian herb blend

1/3 cup sweet onion

1 or 2 cloves of garlic

2 TBS grey poupon mustard or like

salt & pepper to taste

In the blender add the vinegar and herbs, onion and mustard together and blend until smooth

slowly add oil until creamy

Bee Keeper's Meeting~

I'm pretty excited! Tonight I am going to my friend Jennifer's to "work the bees". She has two or maybe three hives and is going to let me help her do something or other to them. We are going into town after that for my first ever Bee Keeper's meeting!

I have spent the past two weeks researching honey bees and hives and in my own typical fashion, chomping at the bit to dive right in and get some. I love a good project! However, my husband is a little more tame than me and is not at all thrilled with the idea of keeping bees. Actually, he hates the idea. So...we agreed that I would spend the year researching, and then by early spring of next year if we decide to do it, then I can get my first hive. Early spring is apparently the best time to start up, so there's my deadline for research and conning, er, um, I mean convincing my husband to agree to this wonderful plan!

Raw organic eggs from pastured chickens – Raw, free-range eggs are an inexpensive and amazing source of high-quality nutrients that many people are deficient in, especially high-quality protein and fat. To find free-range pasture farms, try your local health food store, or go to http://www.eatwild.com or http://www.localharvest.org.

Grass-fed beef or organ meats -- Grass-fed beef is very high in vitamins A, B12 and E, omega-3 fats, beta carotene, zinc and the potent immune system enhancer CLA (conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid). But don't confuse "organic" with grass-fed, since many organically raised cows are still fed organic corn, which you don't want. However, most grass-fed cows are raised organically.

Coconut oil -- Besides being excellent for your thyroid and your metabolism, coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which converts in your body to monolaurin – a compound also found in breast milk that strengthens a baby's immunity.

Its medium chain fatty acids, or triglycerides (MCT's) also impart a number of health benefits, including raising your body's metabolism and fighting off pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. Make sure you choose an organic coconut oil that is unrefined, unbleached, made without heat processing or chemicals, and does not contain GM ingredients.

Berries -- Blueberries and raspberries rate very high in antioxidant capacity compared to other fruits and vegetables. They are also lower in fructose than many other fruits.

Broccoli – Broccoli contains the highest amount of isothiocyanates, a cancer-fighting compound, of all the crunchy vegetables. Studies have shown that just 10 spears a week (5 servings) can make a difference in your health.

Chlorella –This single-cell freshwater algae acts as an efficient detoxification agent by binding to toxins (most of which promote chronic inflammation), such as mercury, and carrying them out of your system. The chlorophyll in the chlorella helps you process more oxygen, cleanses your blood and promotes the growth and repair of your tissues. Tea – As for beverages, clean pure water is a must for optimal health, but if you want another beverage, a good choice with added health benefits is high quality herbal teas.

Matcha tea is the most nutrient-rich green tea and comes in the form of a stone-ground powder, completely unfermented. The best Matcha comes from Japan and has up to 17 times the antioxidants of wild blueberries, and seven times more than dark chocolate. Tulsi is another tea loaded with antioxidants and other micronutrients that support immune function and heart health.

Krill Oil—Krill oil is the only dietary supplement that makes it to this list, and that's only because the ideal food source for these essential omega-3 fats has been destroyed by widespread pollution. Do yourself a favor and carve out a little room if you can for some chickens! Eggs are one of God's wonderful little protein packages for us.

Free range chickens lay beautiful and delicious eggs. The hens that are allowed to bask in the sunshine, eat bugs, seeds, and grass will lay eggs far more nutritious than poor little factory farmed hens. Even when it says "organic", or "Free range" or "cage free" on the egg cartons, beware! Creative statements are often made and if you could see the living conditions with your own eyes, you would be disgusted.

Before there were factories, there were everyday people raising gardens, chickens, a Thanksgiving turkey, goats or cows for milk, and keeping bees. You don't have to live way out in the country to do these things, either. Enhance your life- slow down, savor life and all it holds, the way it was meant to be lived.

Eggs from pasture raised hens as opposed to factory farmed have:

2/3 more vitamin A

2 times more omega-3 fatty acids

3 times more vitamin E

Raw Spicey Flax Crackers~

Last summer I had a neighbor give me a large quantity of some sort of spicey green pepper from a local garden. I have no idea what they were, but they packed some heat and were really tasty. I dehydrated most of them so they wouldn't go bad before I could use them, and then ground them in the food processor until they were a nice powder. What a great thing! I put them in this great little mason jar with the old -timey lid and keep it on the counter, ready to shake a little spice into my dishes. We like spice around here!

Recently I used some of this lovely hot powder in my spicey flax crackers. My husband and I adore flax crackers, and they are so good for you. Heat destroys all those lovely oils in the seeds though, so you lose any benefits when you cook them. I eat them raw in smoothies, or like this, in my dehydrated crackers. Remember to use a low setting. I like no higher than 105'

I used my VitaMix for this recipe. I honetly use whatever is in the fridge, and it turns out yummy. For these I used 2 or 3 plump jalenpenos (you might like 1/2 or only 1) some green onions, half an unpeeled lemon, salt and pepper.

I pureed that mixture with plenty of water, then I added my flax seeds. I never measure- sorry! I added enough so that there was still about 3 inches of water over the top of them. Then I added the spicey powder. When they get wet, you let them sit a few minutes and they turn into a gelatinous goo. That looks gross, but it ensures that the mass will stick together, and not fall through the little mesh holes of the dehydrator even though it looks like liquid that will pour through.

Spread the goo on the trays- a little thicker than you'd think. Make sure you have the trys covered with the kind of liner for liquid-y type things, or else use some parchment paper cut to fit.

Deydrate overnight or several hours and then flip over after scoring into cracker shapes, or else just do like I do and break them up. Let them dry another few hours until really crispy.

Life Without Limits Book Review

I admit I rarely if ever (maybe never?!) read motivational type books. I was interested in Nick's story because I have seen his Youtube videos. Cried like a baby too. I'm glad I read it! Nick was so very open in this book, sharing personal stories, childhood incidents, and even some raw emotions.This handsome young Australian was born without arms or legs to parents who had no clue their first born son was going to be disabled. They were devasted and Nick unflinchingly shares that his mother would not even hold him at first. Broke my heart! I didn't find a person to pity at all, but one to admire and even emulate. Nick Vujicic (Voy-a-chich) is not only an inspiration, but a determined evangelist, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, math wiz...surfer, drummer, world traveler, and much more. He didn't let his lack of limbs limit him, but found strength in the Lord and family, and decided to be not only happy and productive, but ridiculously so. He says he is ridiculously happy, and I believe him!

I'm not usually easily influenced, but I feel that reading this book did change my perspective and give me more drive to create, dream big, and not allow self-imposed limits in my life. My whole family is in line to read it! That delights me, because I think Nick's message is too good not to share. I am a little picky about writing, and I felt the book to be a bit redundant at times. It bugged me, I admit, but really it was well-written other than that and I had a hard time putting it down.

Nick encourages his readers to make a difference, to find their purpose, to be hopeful, encourages people to believe in yourself, value yourself, maintain a good attitude, act with courage, practice resilience, master change, form empowering relationships, act on opportunities, and live a little crazy. He breaks all of his suggestions down to bite sized pieces and offers not only a great deal of practical advice, but personal stories that apply and help you learn to laugh at yourself as he does himself. He's definitely one up on most of us for humility.

The back of the book has a list of resources to help you get involved in making a difference for others, too.

The story of a young woman Nick met in Indonesia named Esther really touched me. I love how God intervenes in amazing ways sometimes and Nick does a great job of relating stories to illustrate that. He has a beautiful faith and that's why I took his words to heart. It wasn't mere humanistic advice he was sharing, but heartfelt and hard-won wisdom from his own life experience.

So, this young man is exceptional, and has turned out an exceptional book. Worth the read!

My best Nubian doe and best Nigerian Dwarf buck got married and gave me a gorgeous set of triplets. Two doelings and a buckling. ALL with blue eyes! Amazing!

These are exciting to me because I love to have rich milk for cheese, icecream, and soapmaking, as well as icey cold in the fridge to drink. The combination of these two breeds is really fun. Flashy colors, extra butterfatty milk, and sometimes, blue eyes! I was shocked to find that each of them inherited their sire's eye color. He always throws at least one pair every batch of kids, but for all the babies to come out with blue is nothing short of amazing. He really has strong, dominant blue genes. I love that rascally little buck!

I was holding little Bella up so I could get a picture of the pretty eyes. She doesn't look to happy to be held up in the air, does she? She's a flashy little thing. Her sister got the black, brown and rust trim of their mom, and the little buckling is black and shite but with speckles in the white on his side, and this little girl is alot of white on top with splashes of black, tan, and a bit of grey I think. Quite colorful.

These were born on the 11th, my anniversary- what a great gift! Last year Luci has twin does on my birthday. ")

My Broken Heart

We are foster parents. We knew ahead of time there would be broken hearts involved in this ministry. Including and especially our own. Well, today I got to put my own broken heart on the altar for the first time. I know it won't be the last. Scary.

Saturday we got a very new baby, discharged right from the hospital. Juggling a newborn, along with our 9 month old foster baby, lack of sleep and all the appointments and phone calls and meetings required of a new foster placement, really wore me out. I think emotionally I could think clearer with more sleep! We only kept the baby four days because Doug's shoulder was getting abused trying to help with two babies. He had surgery in January and isn't supposed to be using it yet. Handing the baby over to the new foster mom today was hard, but it was a punch in the gut to me when toward the end of the meeting I found out the baby would be going to daycare 5 days a week as soon as possible. I really wish I could have kept him here! A newborn shouldn't go to daycare at all. He needs time. Oh my aching heart!

Another heart ache is that I found out that where I live (an area of agriculture and alot of rural living) there are between 600 and 700 children placed in foster care....a month!!

What is wrong with our society?! I mean, that's a huge number. That's a problem. The families losing these kids are often steeped in drugs, alcohol, crime, and violence, generations deep. The kids stay in care because their grandparents and aunts and uncles are in no better shape than their parents. That's sad.

We need to get praying and acting church. Oh yes we do.

At the end of fall I will take another baby I think. I am waiting because I know that it's rarely a short-term thing and I need to operate as if it's a permanent situation. This time I will make sure we can handle a new baby and the rest of our life and kids, because I never want to hand one off to another home again. Shuffling children about is so wrong for them. Terrible. My heart is still broken and if it weren't for my husband needing his arm to "win our bread" I'd still be suffering for lack of sleep with a newborn, and juggling every minute of the day with two babies and two other sons who need me as well. There's no shortage of children if you are willing to risk your heart and sacrifice your days...and nights. Eternity is at stake for these kids, and life here on earth. So many broken lives. I hope we can stop worrying about our entertainment and comfort long enough to remember them.

Sir Quinlan and the Swords of Valor Review

A thoroughly enjoyable adventure with a message!

I had a great time reading this book and really identified with the main character. Yes, even though he was a young man; we all have something in us that wants to be brave, courageous and true to our cause, and for those of us whose cause is Christ, this really stirs things up! Inspiring!

Chuck Black is a skilled story teller and he weaves character lessons and biblical allegory with thrilling and engaging results. His writing reminds me of C.S. Lewis. Homeschool moms like me will love the fact that in the back of the book are discussion questions and better yet, an answer section, which not all books have. The questions could really get your family going at the dinner table. Food for thought is an understatement. This was good stuff, not fluff at all.This book lends itself to reading aloud with the family all gathered; there's something for everyone. The fact that some of the knights are female put a smile on my face. Very appropriate since "the Prince" calls men and women to fight for the Kingdom!

I got caught up in the mystery of the paytha creatures. Chuck Black was clever! I didn't guess.

This book is #5 in The Knights of Arrethrae series, the second of Mr. Black's series. I am certainly going to read the others now!

My two oldest sons have been reading Mr. Black since his books first came out, when we had to order them right from him directly. I remember, years ago, calling his home phone and speaking with him. He was gracious and asked questions about the son I was purchasing the first series for, and personalized each book he sent. Warm fuzzies for mom! It's always nice to know a favorite author is kind.

Sir Quinland is a newly recruited knight for the Swords of Valor. He is desperately trying to fit in, but he is the least of them. When someone close to the Swords of Valor dies, they disband. Quinlan runs from his past, only to have it catch up to him. Then he realizes he must rejoin the band to stop the evil forces of Lucius!

This book is two thumbs up for me! It has a great message and a lot of action! But in my opinion, Sir Dalton and the Shadow Heart was my favorite so far. I think the moral for Sir Quinlan and the Swords of Valor was if you don't believe in the Lord with all your heart truly, your life will be empty. I give this book 5 stars!

This is a highly recommended book if you love to read about knights, castles, and chivalry.

I recently had the opportunity to review this recipe ebook, and I have to say, it's the best raw recipe book out there for my taste. I could have done without so many pictures of Carmella and her pal, even though she seems like a sweetheart, because I would appreciate her so much more with a bra on. That's beside the point though; I'm just weird like that and it bugged me.I'm really visual so the pictures of the food helped me immensely. She takes gorgeous photos to illustrate her books and her blog is full of scrumptious recipes too. Her pictures don't just inspire me to get up the nerve to make a delicious raw creation, but they often cause me to drool and crave! The raw deserts this woman makes are ten times more divine than anything baked. I also like her take on snacks, which I could live on.

I highly recommend this book for raw foodies and for those just starting out. The recipes are often simple but elegant, nutritious, and I mostly like 'em because of the deliciouness quotient! I have 8 or 9 raw food recipe books on my shelf, and scour the web for good recipes too, and I can say with integrity that this book is a raw winner!

Extreme in the Raw Oatmeal Cookies

I am not a 100% raw girl, but I do try to eat alot of raw. I feel better and have way more energy. My diet downfall is mocha lattes, cookies, and anything cheesey-gooey. Oh ya baby. Cookies are a huge threat to my jeans, so I have found that if I make raw cookies, they taste better, and even though they are calorie-packed still, the calories are different. (not wasted) I am getting nutrients- alot, in those calories at least. Also, they seem to satisfy the craving with just one or two instead of...3, okay, 4 or 5, alright! Maybe 6. ugh.

These delightful critters are my favorites, because I can eat them for breakfast or lunch, and not feel guilty. They are good for my body. If I pack a couple around with me I avoid the tempting naughty treats at Starbucks and other places I frequent. There you have it, I have admitted that I frequent that coffee joint. Well, I do, and I am hooked. Besides, the baristas are nice to me.

Anyway,

Here's my answer to Starbuck's Outrageous Oatmeal Cookies- which are to-die-for, but mine-are-better!

Extreme in the Raw Oatmeal Cookies

I quartered a large, tart green apple

added a large, very ripe banana

1/4 flax seeds

1 TBS cinnamon

1/4 tsp. sea salt

1/4 cup raw honey

threw 6 or 7 pitted dates

and blended it all with enough warm water to make a nice wet "goo" in my VitaMix. You really want it to be a wet goo to hold up against all the nuts and dried fruit. You don't want those goodies to crumble off when they are drying!

Then I added 1 cup of oats (I know these are steamed and not truthfully raw, but...oh well!)

1/2 cup raw almonds (again, I know these are steamed, but...you know)

and 1/4 cup extra virgin coconut oil (the good stuff)

blend until just chunky.

I poured this out into a bowl and added another 1/2 cup of oats,
1/4 cup raw sunflower seeds
1/2 cup broken pieces of pecans
1/2 cup broken pieces of walnuts
1/2 cup of raisins
1/2 cup of dehydrated blueberries from our summer picking last year
and some vanilla extract, about 1 tsp.

~*~ at this point, you can really throw in so many different things than what I have. "Instead of, or in addition to". Like: any nuts you like! Any dehydrated fruits, berries, things like peaches (which I had and forgot about! Darn it!), apples, bits of figs, dates, prunes, nut butters, dehydrtaed banana, coconut, or cherries. You get the idea. ~*~

Then I just mix that good stuff up, taste it to see if it's what I'm looking for. (It's delicious! Nutty, fruity, and I can taste that apple) Next I scoop it into spoonfuls on my dehydrator trays and press it down. I used parchment paper on the tray that I didn't have a thingy for. I know, "thingy"- but I can't remember the name of the plastic protector thingy that goes on my trays so gooey stuff doesn't stick in the ribs of the tray.
I dehydrate them at 105' for about 24 hours. I like a little crispiness on the edges. You may like to do it for less.

I have an "old school" Harvest snack master that works great. I was going to get the big dehydrator but changed my mind. I'm the raw fan, not my family, and I have no extra space to store such a big machine. There would be room if I gave up my coffee machine and my espresso machine, but nah, that ain't gonna happen! *U*

My raw cookies are better looking and tasting than the baked version, which I also made for the ladie's group I'm attending tonight. Below are the baked cookies.

I had to taste one to make sure they were good enough for my friends... *U* They were good! But not as good as the raw ones, really.

I love to eat healthy normally, and love mostly raw food normally, so what's this about? I think it's emotional eating.

When I was younger (and always thin) I couldn't care less about food. I ate if I needed it, and couldn't eat at all if I were emotional. The older I get the more I eat and less active I am. Phooey. I hate that.

So, there's my latest issue. I'm sure there will be another, but for now, this one is what I'm 'fessing.

'Round these parts we don't turn on cartoons for the baby. We stand him up in front of the sliding glass door and throw croutons out for the little red hen on the back deck. She comes up to the glass and pecks, the baby goes wild!

Givin' the Soap a New Look~

I'm ready for a new year! I tweaked my soap business a bit to shake things up too.

Since I use raw milk and keep it raw for soaping in order to keep all the enzymes, B vitamins, etc. to make the best soap I am able, I decided I needed a new name for my business too.

I updated my labels too. However, I kept my recipes exactly the same because I love my soaps!

I Have to Ask...

This picture is one of my favorites. Our youngest son wore these goggles as a toddler every day. At the dinner table. In the bathtub. To the grocery store. Yep, I let him. Sometimes my husband would wear a pair with him at home, just to make him happy. Fond memories.

I have to ask this question because it has bothered me for a couple of years. If you are at all involved in adoption, and the adoption world, you will understand I hope. In some circles of families who adopt alot, maybe this question has already been dealt with, but for the rest of us, I think it's valid and needs to be brought up.

I believe in adoption. But I know firsthand it's a huge risk. Emotionally takes a toll. What sometimes people don't realize is the depth of pain involved in loss. Loss for the adopted child, certainly. That does get brought up, still, probably not enough, especially in foster care situations. But what about the family that adopts? I'm specifically talking about the adoption of older children, and by families with their own biological children already. What about the loss the biological children feel? Think about it; they lose their family- as it once was. It forever changes, never to be the same. We talk about that sometimes, right? But could you ever really know what it's like until it's already happening? Trust me, it's one of those things you can't anticipate if things go south. I mean badly.

And why the guilt and shame? "How could you be so selfish? That poor little child had nothing/nobody/etc. and you have always had..._________fill in the blank.

Since when is the sense of loss and abandonment of an adopted child more valid and important than that of a child who lost his/her family life to a major change. It really is a loss. Things that were a certain way are now changed, never to return. Think it through.

Who in the world is to say that one loss is greater than the other when an adoption happens and goes wrong? From a kid's perspective some other kid comes in, takes up alot of room, and emotionally speaking maybe most of the room. The family is drastically different and this kid doesn't appreciate it and makes trouble and causes grief and the parents are focused on that one, their energies are in that direction and their time is not only divided but also mostly somewhere else. It's a loss! They no longer have the cozy family life they once had. No longer the attention, the sense of closeness and intimacy at times.

I just had to ask, who says that the biological kids in that situation should be ashamed for feeling loss? For wishing life had never been so terribly altered? That they are selfish for wishing it had never happened? I have to ask- what do you think? I'm open to an honest answer.

Confessions and Regrets of a Christmas Cookie-aholic

Every year it's the same...except this year I really thought- was confident even- that things would be different. I wouldn't fall prey to: The Christmas Cookie.

But I fell. Hard.

I had been drinking lots of green smoothies, eating lots of raw, and dehydrating yummy raw snacks, juicing almost daily...and yet.

My daughter came home for the holidays, and she and my 11 year old son love to bake. We have traditions you know. Sugar cookies. Peppermint pinwheel cookies. Peanutbuttter cookies with chocolate in the middle, cinnoman rolls for breakfast...We make so many cookies that the whole neighborhood gets them delievered to their doors Christmas eve, besides the dozens upon dozens we eat. Why? I don't know. It's a tradition! We just do.

This year I nibbled one, and I should have known better, 'cause that's all she wrote and I was down. I ate so many cookies I gained 3 pounds in as many days. Then I got the flu along with the rest of the family. I NEVER get the flu! (well, not for years!) I'm still not over it. My "fat jeans" are even tight. ugh.

All year long you will rarely (I'm no saint) see white flour, sugar, and especially Butter Flavored Crisco (never!) touch my lips. Until Christmas.

I don't even know what hits me. It's sick. It really is. I know they are terrible for my health. But my goodness, they are just so delicious and buttery and...honestly, if there were a plate right here, I'd be back at it. I told you: sick.

So, even though I am not one for New Year's Resolutions, I am at least taking the opportunity to get back to the 80% raw plan. I'd like to feel better, and believe you me right now, I certainly could use some help looking better. After a week long sugar binge , and suffering with the flu, I'm resembling death-warmed-over.

So, I'm off to my favorite resource. The Sunny Raw Kitchen Blog. This lady really inspires me with her recipes. They are incredible. She takes such great photos that you can practically taste the food on her blog. Sometimes I think I may be in dnager of drooling, and some days I get busy in the kitchen right away because I can't wait to try what she just posted. I'm not a 100% raw person, and you don't have to be to enjoy the health benefits of some raw food. Why is it so weird to love some raw recipes? I mean honestly, they taste amazing! The blog owner is Carmella and she has a new cookbook out- well, an uncookbook I guess you would call it. It comes in E-book form and I believe it's now available in paper form. (I just checked, yes, it is available right off her blog) I have the E-book and the recipes are gorgeous. I'll be doing a review next week, so look for it. In the meantime, check out her blog and her e-book "Delightfully Raw" and let me know what you think, even if you have never tried a single raw recipe in your life. (Check out the desserts- they are SO much better than cooked!)

I'm going to usher in 2011 true to form for me; an early night to bed. Tomorrow morning: raw green smoothie for breakfast! What was the dreaded "last 10 pounds" has now turned into the last 12 or 13 pounds. It's time to get rid of it and be healthy.
