This was Rook, our favorite little Nubian kid. We were planning on keeping him as a pet- which we usualy don't do with the goats, but he was so unusually sweet and friendly we couldn't bear to part with him. Unfortunately today, we did, and not by choice. The neighbor's two black labs chased my goats and ran the baby down and killed him. Thankfully the neighbor was there, saw the whole thing, and was able to call them off before the dogs got any other goats.
Sad day for us, especially the children, who took it pretty hard. They had to see Dad carry his little dead body out of the pasture with blood running down his arms. This is the hard part of raising animals. They see life, and they see death. In the end, we decided that little Rook had a very good life here, even if it ended too soon and too brutally.
We also decided we learned a very good lesson about latching gates behind us to protect the rest of the goats by keeping them in, and dogs out.
I'm so very sorry. I really am. The pictures of Rook are adorable. When I was little I had a pet lamb and the same sort of thing happened.

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear this sad news. I think the little one was blessed to spend his short time on earth with you. Were the neighbor's dogs on your property?

ReplyDeleteI just now saw this. I am so sorry! Precious little thing. I am having issues with our neighbors dogs on both d=sides of us.....3 labs and one coon dog! sigh They will not stay out of our yard and had killed off all of our chickens a month ago. So very frustrating!
ReplyDeleteOh poor little Rook.
ReplyDeleteI am very sorry to hear about your sweet baby goat. I know....it is hard for children and us too--dealing with the death of animals...but I always try to remember what joy they brought us and what joy we gave them back!
