My Royal Palm Turkey Pair

I finally got my long-awaited for Royal Palm turkeys. Yay! Except the young pair I bought, supposed to be a hen and tom, are both toms. I found this out yesterday when I noticed the Spanish Black, and other turkey hens cooing, and both the Royal Palms fanning out and gobbling in reply. It's bird breeding season you know...and I was sad at first, but realized the toms are so beautiful I won't mind at all having two stately males fanning around the barnyard. They will mate with the other heritage breeds I have, and I'll get some interesting crossbreeds at any rate, until I can find some Royal Palm hens.

  1. They're beautiful! Are they noisy/messy/smelly? Might be worth getting some matching girlies to keep them company. Do they lay an egg every day like chickens do? Are the eggs quite big?

  3. I love old breeds of turkeys. I raised three Burbon Red Turkeys a couple years back. I find that turkeys are friendlyer than chickens are. God bless

  4. well, I keep a variety of turkeys, and we do eat the eggs. The eggs are a bit larger than the average hen egg, and very tasty. They do lay, but like ducks and geese, they don't have as many as chickens. I prefer turkey eegs to duck or goose. The geese eggs are very large and rich. Quite good for baking and perfect for making an omellete for two people!
