The Critters are Good Therapy

We went to the Civil Air Patrol Open house last Monday night. I'm the one in the blue T-shirt and white sweater. This boy...er, young man, is filling me in on the details of the rescue packs. My older son is in C.A.P. and the younger can't wait until he's old enough too.

Below is one of my newest soaps. I didn't get alot made this year. We had so many cancers and deaths in the family...I still feel tired and run down. It has taken it's toll on my family. A huge toll. Soap just didn't seem as important this year. I sold most of my goats too. It was sad, but now it's easier to keep track of the goats and sheep I do have, and give them personal attention.
Lucy is such a good milker. I came in from milking this morning, fed my kefir grains, and realized I still had 3 quarts of milk in the fridge for the children to drink, and also got a warm feeling from the 7 cartons of free-range eggs from my hens in there. I love my critters. We take care of them, and they take care of us. I get alot of pure enjoyment and pleasure just from watching them run loose on the property from my windows. Theraputic.

I get so much out of the milk and eggs that are provided right here on this property. I love that the taste can't be bought from a store...I love that I know where it came from, and have been personally involved in every aspect- I especially love eating eggs from hens that were hatched right here and grew up while I watched, or drinking milk from a doe that I milk myself and also one that was born here with me standing there watching and catching. There's no joy greater here than the birthings!
That's why I keep the aromatic bucks that make the whole ranch a terrible stench fall thru early winter...I need them for all the good things I enjoy- the birthings, milking, soaps and cheeses...makes it all worthwhile.

Handsome Rob looks like he's in jail...he's not used to the pen. He only goes there during the rut. The rest of the year he's got 10 acres to wander and browse. You'll be out soon buddy!

  1. My sentiments exactly! There is not much that compares to the joy and satisfaction of raising animals. One of my favorite parts of the day is just spending time with them all:)

We, too, have had a tough year of pain/surgeries/etc. around our home. It does take a lot out of you ~emotionally, physically, spiritually. My (13 year old) daughter just shared some of her thoughts from God last night that really spoke to me in the midst of trials. "God gives us pain because it is the only way we can see the times He catches us when we stumble. God gives us hardship and suffering because it helps us understand His true love." It's okay to take the time to grieve and just live, enjoying the things God gave you to enjoy:) Terri

  3. Will be praying for you to get some rest time and renewed strength- sounds like you've had a tough year.
The soap looks beautiful, I bet it feels great. I've always wanted to learn to make it, but money is a bit tight right now, so maybe later on someday. Praying!
