The Girl's Still Got It! (and so do you!)

Two of my favorite things: Bible study and a good chat with a beloved friend. That's what I felt like I got every time I sat down with Liz Curtis Higgs' newest book, "The Girl's Still Got It". It's almost like a warmly detailed and rich novel (deliciousness in word form!)- but it's an in-depth, extremely well researched Bible study on the book of Ruth. The historical data, the culture, the language- she really takes you back, but makes the timeless story completely relevant at the same time- which of course, it is. Liz touches on personal issues, social issues, and all manner of real stuff that we are grappling with today, which apprently women have grappled with in all centuries. This book re-opens your eyes to the fact that the Bible, written so long ago, is still contemporary. Always will be.

Liz writes extremely well and I have enjoyed all of her historical novels- devoured them over and over again really. She brings the same touch to this study. She takes us along the journey from Moab to Israel, from sorrow and bitterness to rejoicing, with a voice that's compassionate, funny, honest, and understanding. We go verse by verse, making the characters and thus the Word come alive. This book is like a great conversation, full of chatty introspection and details, but make no mistake, it's an amazingly academic study- painless, I assure you. I found myself looking forward to naptime for the kids so I could get cozy with Ruth and the gang. I loved, loved, loved this study- and plan on giving these books as gifts to my girlfriends as occassions arise. It's easily one of my new all-time favorites.
